A few weeks past, I wrote how there were few women in LOTR. But they are just as sparse in the Old Testament.
Adam has direct communication with G-d. Eve never communicates directly--only hearsay from Adam
Cain has direct communication with G-d. Thence, many begattings later, Noah also has direct communication.
Eve, after the fall, is cursed to bear children in pain. Gosh, what an incentive to procreate.
But aside from G-d's disappointment and his conditional regard for his creation, we have no examples of mother love and unconditional regard.
Abram is punished with the fiery furnace by his father for destroying idols. Decades later, he traumatizes his son by attempting to kill him to show G-d doesn't want child sacrifice. Of course, the very threat kills Sarah. Child sacrifice bad, wife abuse cool.
Rebecca only has unconditional love for Jacob. Jacob is the Oedipal winner, edging out that wimp, Isaac. Although you'd think Rebecca would favor her hunter son, so opposite of the wimp, Isaac and her poet-son, Jacob.
The story is told of Jacob's pursuit of Rachel and how he is tricked with Leah. Once he gets Rachel, their part is over. Leah gives him 10 sons (daughters never mentioned; Rachel 2 (daughters never mentioned). All the sons become founders of tribes. Daughters surplus to requirements. How these tribes would prosper without them--unacknowledged.
I can only imagine how bad the competing tribes were, if Naomi begged to be accepted. After all, Joseph's brother sold him into slavery. How common was this practice among the tribes? Were the African tribes who sold slaves to the European descended from the 10 Lost tribes--who descended from the 10 brothers, who sold their own kinfolk as slaves? And as bad as this was, apparently the non-monotheists were worse?
Worse, throughout the Old Testament, G-d threatens and punishes. It is a masculine energy, a very conditional lover, a power who creates and destroys. And the men who follow that G-d model themselves on such a power.
Oh, but I am weary of dealing with such men who only want me when I reflect back that which they wish to see, that which reinforces their narcissism.
