In President Trump's opinion, "you vote for a Democrat, you're being very disloyal to the Jewish people and you're being very disloyal to Israel."
Trump is ephemera. What is eternal: Pirkei Avot.
What doth Pirkei Avot tell us about loyalty and how to conduct business. Here is the intro:
Shimon the Righteous was [one] of the remnants of
the Great Assembly. He was accustomed to say: The world is
based on three things--on the Torah, on the service [of] G-d
and upon acts of loving-kindness. Antigonos....was accustomed
to say: Be not as servants who serve the master for the sake of receiving
[even a token]reward, but rather, be like servants who serve the master
not for the sake of receiving [a token]reward and [nonetheless]
the fear of Heaven should be upon you...Yose ben Yochanan....says:
Let your house be open wide; treat the poor as members of your household...
Yehoshua ben Perachyah says: Make a teacher for yourself; acquire
a friend for yourself; and judge everyone favorably. Nittai...says:
Distance yourself from a bad neighbor; do not associate with a
wicked person; and do not despair of retribution....Shemayah and Avtalyon
received the tradition from them. Shemayah says: Love work
despise positions of power; and do not become overly familiar with the
government. Avtalyon says: Scholars, be cautious with your
words, for you may incur the penalty of exile and be banished
to a place of evil waters [heresy]. The disciples who follow you
there may drink and die; and consequently, the Name of Heaven may
be desecrated.
And this is what I will: President Trump does not tell me how to be a Jew--whether or not I am a good Jew or a bad Jew is not within his realm of expertise. I will take to hear Shemayah's words: Love work, despie positions of power, and do not become overly famliar with the government. And, cling to Nittai: Do not despair of retribution.
Take what you will from this.
